Press a Button, Shade the Whole Car

This is a motorized car umbrella, not a fold-out sunshade you wrestle into place. Press the wireless remote and the canvas extends over your entire roofline on its own, no climbing on the car, no fighting with poles.

Automatic vs. Manual: What Actually Changes

Both versions use the same canopy and frame. The difference is entirely in how it opens.

  • Automatic (from $285.99): Wireless remote control, detachable battery, motorized open and close via a commercial-grade 900N linear actuator (~202 lbf opening force).
  • Manual (from $249.99): Same canopy and coverage, hand-operated open and close. No remote, no battery, no motor. Priced lower because it's mechanically simpler, not a stripped-down version of the same feature set.

Portable Automatic, Portable Manual, or the Overlander Pro: Which One's Right for You?

These aren't just three price points; they're answers to three different situations.

Portable Automatic uses the same suction-hub umbrella as Manual, and it still comes off before you drive and goes back up wherever you park next; that part doesn't change. What changes is how you open and close it: press the remote instead of working a hand lever. That's worth it if you'd rather not fumble with a lever in the rain, in the dark, or with your hands full, and it's a natural fit for recurring outdoor trips, a weekly kayak or paddleboard outing, a regular hiking trailhead, a marina, a weekend sports league, where you want it up fast after a long day without wrestling anything by hand.

Portable Manual is the identical mechanism and coverage, just hand-operated instead of remote. Same teardown-and-setup routine either way; this one just costs less and has no battery to charge or remote to keep track of. Good fit for occasional use, a second car, or if you'd honestly rather have a simple mechanical lever with nothing electronic involved.

Want to Skip the Setup and Teardown Every Drive?

This umbrella installs and comes off every time you park, which works fine if you only need shade occasionally. If you park outside daily and want to stop dealing with that step, our newer model mounts permanently to a roof rack and retracts into its own housing at the push of a button. Watch it in action in the demo video.

If you have a permanent roof rack and prefer a heavy-duty commercial canopy that stays mounted full-time, explore our premium model.

Built to Handle Sun, Rain, and Wind

The canvas is 210D Oxford fabric rated to block 90% of UV and 60% of infrared heat, and it's waterproof. The automatic version runs on DC 12V at 1A through its detachable battery, and the remote itself carries CE, RoHS, and FCC certification, the last of which matters since this is a wireless-transmitting device sold in the US.

What This Actually Protects Your Car From

  • Sun and UV exposure: the leading cause of cracked dashboards, faded upholstery, and steering wheels too hot to touch
  • Heat buildup: 60% infrared rejection means less of that blast-furnace feeling getting in on a hot day, and less strain on your AC to cool it back down
  • Rain: the canvas is fully waterproof
  • Tree sap and bird droppings: two of the most common causes of paint damage if you park under trees
  • Dust, pollen, and general grime settling on the glass and paint overnight
  • Frost and light snow on the windshield: less scraping most winter mornings

What it's not built for: hail or heavy snow load. This is a canvas shade, not a structural shelter. If hailstorms or heavy snow accumulation are a regular concern where you park, that's outside what a fabric canopy is designed to hold up against.

Frequently asked questions

Both still come off before you drive and go back up at your next parking spot; that doesn't change between them. The only difference is how you open and close the canopy itself: Automatic uses a remote, Manual uses a hand lever. Pick Automatic if you'd rather press a button than work a lever, especially in bad weather or with your hands full. Pick Manual if you want to save money and skip the battery entirely. And if you don't want to bother with setup or teardown at all, take a look at the Overlander Pro instead; it mounts permanently and skips that step altogether.
